When I tell people that I am a 'Lifestyle Coach' - I get a lot of vague looks, raised eyebrows, slow head nods and a few..."Say what now?"
Along with all of this I get plenty of questions about what Life Coaches really do and then there's the myths- oh lordy the myths! So I am here today to bust those myths once and for all so that if you're considering hiring a life coach you know exactly what they DO and DO NOT do, so you can make an informed decision.
MYTH: LIFE COACHING TAKES TOO MUCH TIME
Life coaching clients can actually achieve some remarkable results and help you make serious progress towards your goals in a short amount of time. Even as little an an hour or two per month. When you consider that most life coaches don't require you to meet in person- they can work with you via an online meeting or on the phone, there is no travel time involved either. With a new clarity of direction as a result of your coaching sessions, you will begin operating more efficiently and you might just find more time and space in your life. Life Coaching takes too much time? I don't think so. Myth busted.
MYTH: LIFE COACHES HAVE A PERFECT LIFE
Haha- this is so wrong that it's funny. I have never and will never claim to have the perfect life. I can be a total hot-mess at times. I'm human after all! But this crazy life of mine - it's all mine and I love it. My life is about progress over perfection. Its about living with intention and putting first those things in my world which are truly valuable to me - family, community, experiences and joy! And beyond all of this, my life is about helping my clients to find clarity and growth in their own lives. My super power is not being perfect, it's being real, open, honest and motivating. Bam- another myth shattered!
MYTH: LIFE COACHES ARE ONLY FOR FAMOUS PEOPLE
Sure, Oprah, Hugh Jackman and Leo DiCaprio have life coaches, but they aren't JUST for famous people. Any person who wants a hand to achieve their greater goals (be they sporting, business, career or personal goals) can benefit from having someone in their corner, providing clarity, direction, growth and holding them to account. My lifestyle and declutter coaching clients are regular people like you and me. They are stay-at-home mums, working mums and professionals who are just trying to create more space in their lives (physically or mentally) for the things that are most important to them. We don't meet in fancy restaurants or hotel lobbies in our designer clothes- we have zoom meetings or phone chats in our slippers with no make-up on because we're real people who want real results. Just for famous people? Not in my town baby. Myth exploded.
MYTH: COACHING IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE PROBLEMS
Coaching used to be thought of as something for 'under-performers' or people that couldn't succeed on their own. But listen up folks - times have changed! Even those that are super successful have coaches that help them to perform at their best and reach their future goals. And equally, people that are just cruising through life but want to take things to a new level and really start achieving finding having a coach can really help them to fast track results too. It's not about whether you can or can't succeed on your own of if you have 'a problem', it's about having someone to be accountable to, someone to empower you and someone to believe in you. Another myth bites the dust.
MYTH: LIFE COACHES TELL THEIR CLIENTS WHAT TO DO
Coaching is not about simply giving people instructions. Heck I'd love to just sit back and bark orders at people all day (especially my kids!) but that wouldn't help my popularity and more importantly wouldn't get people the long term success their looking for. Coaching is about helping my clients to explore what they really want and guide a behaviour change to achieve it. Coaches work on stretching and strengthening their clients to reach their goals. If you're looking for someone to just give you the answers and tell you what to do then life coaching isn't for you. Myth obliterated.
MYTH: LIFE COACHES NEED TO BE AN EXPERT ON YOUR PARTICULAR SITUATION OR INDUSTRY
A life coach uses their skills in questioning, experience in motivating people and a foundation of support, combined with the clients own knowledge of the situation to help the client get what they want. Just like you don't need to have been a champion hockey player to coach a champion hockey team, the skill of the coach lies in getting the desired results not in drawing on their personal experience of that situation. If, however, you are looking for really specific business advice; ask a business coach, public speaking skills; ask a speaking coach or fitness advice; ask a personal trainer.
Life coaches will motivate you, hold you to account and clarify your goals relating to an area of your life needing attention but they don't need to have lived what you're living to help you get success. The myths are dropping like flies!
MYTH: HAVING A LIFE COACH IS JUST LIKE HAVING A BEST FRIEND
There may be some similarities, but having a life coach is different to having a friend. A life coach will push you, they'll stretch you and challenge you. They'll get you out of your comfort zone, ask the hard questions, advocate for you and make you accountable. They will work with you to really nail your goals. But the single most important difference between a friend and a coach is that this relationship is a ONE WAY street! It is about the client, and only the client. The client doesn't have to sit through insufferable stories about the coach's kids or what activities they have planned for next weekend. This partnership is ALL about focusing on the client's success. That and that alone. My life coach is my best friend - Myth be gone.
MYTH: LIFE COACHING IS A SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
Despite what you may think, life coaching isn't all airy-fairy, woo-woo, mantras and finding energy from the universe. Some coaches certainly do offer that side of their practice if that's what you're into, but for me life coaching is outcome driven and completely centred around achieving tangible goals, identifying roadblocks, finding solutions and seriously taking action. If you think you're going to get a lesson in spirituality from me- then you're wrong! That is most definitely not my bag baby. Myth: dissolved.
MYTH: LIFE COACHING IS EXPENSIVE
A session with me will most likely cost you less than a trip to the hairdresser* - sure you wont look as fancy after our session but you'll have more spring in your step and more cash in your purse. So yes - some life coaches are pretty pricey. If you want some time with Tony Robbins it'll cost you upwards of 4k, but not every coach charges like that. Just like handbags exist to suit every budget- coaches too come in an assortment of price points and with different benefits. Don't dismiss life coaching as an option for you based on price alone. Some coaches may charge you an additional retainer fee on top of their hourly rate and others (like yours truly) just charge you session by session. The notion that life coaching is expensive is a myth. When you achieve your outcomes and start living the life you always wanted, I'm sure you'll agree that it was money well spent. Another myth destroyed.

MYTH: YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU REALLY WANT BEFORE YOU HIRE A LIFE COACH
You don't have to be able to articulate exactly what you want out of life to be able to hire a life coach. You might just know that life cannot continue as is. You might know that you want out of your rut or want something more. Through the process of life coaching you'll gain clarity on what that more is for you and and how you can get there. Coaching is all about breaking through, finding focus and creating positive change. You don't need to have all the answers when you show up - you just need to show up. And there goes another myth.
MYTH: YOU HAVE TO BE FEELING 'STUCK' TO NEED NEED A LIFE COACH
You don't have to wait to be stuck or in 'crisis mode' to get the benefits of a life coach. Just like you don't have to wait to be overweight or completely unfit before you get a personal trainer. Life coaching is great to help you get successfully to the next point in your journey regardless of where the starting point is. Maybe life coaching now will prevent you from feeling 'stuck' in the future because you have someone on your side propelling you forward to the life you want. Have to be stuck? Myth crushed!
So that's it - I hope I have challenged what you thought you knew about life coaching and given you more of an insight into what great coaches do and don't do. Naturally, if you have more questions or myths you want busted, please feel free to contact me to discuss.
